The politics of divide and rule

The politics of divide and rule can be learnt from this example.
1.You derecognize a group named Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle in IIT-Madras. Protest starts.
2.You start quoting selectively and propagate that Ambedkar and Periyar stood for two different ideologies. Potray periyar as anti-brahmin while Ambedkar was just anti-brahminism.(I read somewhere that to name a group “Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle” is akin to naming a group “Nehru Jinnah Study Centre")
3.Bring other trivial issues about their view on India,Sanskrit, religion etc. Bury all the core reforms which they did(as there are chances for commonality) and also the issues which the Ambedkar Periyar study circle stood for.
4. After successfully creating the divide, absorb the followers of Ambedkar and ask them to oppose the followers of Periyar as anti-national(becuase Periyar did not believe in India...u see, if you have to follow a person you have to blindly accept all his ideas in total and so all periyar followers are anti-India). Now appropriate Ambedkar as your party idol because its easy to rewrite history and no one is going to cross verify the truth.
5. After the dalit votes turn to your favour, sideline the Ambedkar followers(and dalits).
6. Complete the divide and rule as the main issue is now forgotten.

E.V.Ramasamy(Periyaar)

E.V Ramasamy (Periyaar) was not an avatar of god. He is just a normal human as each one of us and it is childish to expect him to be perfect in everything.

He preached rationalism and self-respect. He attacked the widely held religious beliefs which is bound to hurt the sentiments of followers of many religions. He believed in Aryan-invasion theory and tried for a separate country "Dravidistan".

People accuse him for offending the sentiments of hindus by burning (Lord) Ram's effigies. The very same people celebrate "hatred" every year in Ramaleela by burning huge effigies of Ravan and Kumbhakarna.

People accuse him for sowing seeds of secesssion. Yes, he did. Just like Jinnah tried for a separate pakistan, Periyar tried for a separate Dravidistan. Because he feared that Britishers would be replaced by north-Indians and the south-Indians would still remain without political and economic freedom. Ambedkar went to Britishers to ask for separate electorate for dalits. Ambedkar believed that Upper caste hindus would never give 'social justice' to dalits. Does that mean Ambedkar was a British Agent??

Periyar also organized protests against imposition of hindi way back in 1937.

People accuse periyar for spreading hatred against brahmins. He questioned why brahmins who constitute just 3% of the population occupy 70% of the government posts in madras presidency. He attacked the caste system, the benefits of which the upper castes were enjoying. He attacked the rituals and brought self-respect marriage which does not have brahmin priests and other hindu rituals.

Attacking a century old social-system is bound to create tensions. When social change happens, vested interests groups will try to resist the change and preserve the dominance.

If you have problems with the ideology of periyaar, question the ideology and prove in what way it is wrong. Don't find faults in him like he married a young woman, attacked brahmins etc. As I said before, he is just a normal human and not a 'perfect' god.

P.S: I am not a follower of periyar and I dont subscribe to all his views.

S.C.Bose, Ambedkar and RSS

There has been increased attempts to own up leaders who stood against congress. The leaders now are Subhash Chandra Bose and Ambedkar.

Ambedkar's 125th birth anniversary falls on April 14th. His views are being distorted and quoted out of context to an extent that a RSS spokesperson claimed Ambedkar was the first supporter of "Ghar wapasi"!!!

Next is the sudden love for Subhash Chandra bose and the hue and cry being raised over Bose relatives being spied.

What were the ideas these leaders stood for?? Do they have anything in common with RSS Ideology??

S.C. Bose was ready to forge alliance with Nazis and Japan during WW2 only to counter the british. He considered every human as equal and had no belief in racial policies (or even the aryan link theory between India and Germanic-Europe which even gandhi had once appealed to it). But M.S. Gowalkar admired hitler's ideology of Racial purity. Gowalkar considered hindu race and culture as superior in the Indian sub continent(Hindus-tan) and  asked the non-hindus to embrace hinduism or live as foreigners without any rights.

Bose described himself as "left-wing nationalist" in his book 'The Indian struggle' while RSS is a right-wing nationalist orgn.

Ambedkar in his book 'annihilation of caste' attacked Hinduism directly and claimed that the very foundation of caste system has to be attacked to end it. He led mass conversion of dalits to Buddhism. When he met Gandhi in 1931 he criticised Gandhi's struggle for homeland by his famous remark "Gandhiji. I have no homeland. No untouchable worth the name will be proud of this land".
He never considered Hinduism as a home(ghar) of dalits and his ideology is completely antagonistic to Ghar Wapasi...

In the efforts to trumpet support and own up leaders who stood up against Nehru and Gandhi, I think the RSS will next distort history and start supporting the Britishers.

Language policy of Singapore

As a matter of fact, Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore, who passed away recently, made 4 languages as Official Languages of Singapore-English, Tamil, Malay, Mandarin. This means every single document published by the government would be in all the 4 languages.
Singapore has a bilingual education policy where medium of instruction is English and the other language being the student's mother tongue.
This policy also has its own minor flaws. But it was the best available one to accommodate the interests of the Diverse groups.
The majority linguistic group was intelligent enough to understand that English could not be done away and they also didn't impose their own language on the minority linguistic groups. The majority linguistic group also didnt claim that identity of singapore is their language only.
Singapore was ruled by the British and got later separated from Malaysia. But they never insisted that English and Malay languages must be thrown away from their country.
Singapore is an example of how a nation can progress, (only) if diversity is accepted and accomodated
P.S.This post is just a fact which has been posted because Mr. Lee Kuan Yew passed away. It has nothing to do with any other language policy followed by any other country in the Solar System.

Churchill's prophecy

"If Indians won dominion status, A triumphant brahmin oligarchy would drive out the moslem minority and grind the untouchables into the dust. Gandhi's wealthy backers would extract their fortunes from the sweat of the poor; graft and corruption would become the rule of the day......"

These are the words of Winston Churchill in 1931 when Gandhi-Irwin pact was signed and Irwin had accepted dominion status in principle.

Looking at events like Hashimpura massacre, Bathani Tola massacre, Laxmanpur Bathe massacre and the way judicial system failed to punish the perpetrators, I feel that churchill was right to a certain extent. The triumphant brahmin oligarchy is not there. Instead we have casteism and religious intolerance. We also have the triumphant dominant caste hindus in every region, in every arm of bueraucracy and politics who will keep proving that Churchill was indeed right.

India's Daughter

I remember one politician whose name starts with 'M' and ends with 'Singh' remarking that "Boys make mistakes and so rapists should not be hanged".
An Interesting coincidence is that a rape convict whose name is 'Mukesh Singh' justifies his crime in a similar tone.
The existence of people with mentality of 'Mr.Singh' in politics itself shows that they merely reflect the mentality of our society.
In the continuum of 'patriarchy' on one extreme and 'Equality' on the other extreme, some of us are placed close to patriarchy while some are close to equality. We are in fact part of, and also responsible for every crime which happen against women.
Dowry would have ended long back if we had stopped demanding it atleast after a prohibition law was enacted. Female foetuses would not have been aborted without the connivance of doctors and parents. Secret cam videos would not have gone viral without we sharing them in Whatsapp. Serials and movies glorifying violence against women and commodifying women would not be telecast unless we enjoy watching it. Dark-skinned women would not be ridiculed in fairness cream ads if our families don't prefer for fair-skinned bride. Khap panchayats would not have been dictating the time at which women should venture out and their dress code without our approval. Religious leaders would not have been distinguishing between rural and urban rapes without our support they enjoy.
We are completely okay when a religious leader or a politician echoes our patriarchal views. But we become hysterical when a rape convict echoes the similar views!!!
The documentary 'India's Daughter' clearly shows that crime against women is a social problem, and it is the mindset of the society which is the reason for such crimes. Stringent laws alone cannot stop such crimes, a change in the mindset among us(men as well as women) is what is needed.

Instant Justice and Anarchy

The behaviour of AAP MLAs in Burari police station shows the mindset of instant justice has not changed among these people.

A member of legislative assembly is not a part of the 'Executive' and has no right to give directions to police. Then what was the reason for these MLAs to go to a police station at first place for a kidnapping case?

It reminds me of the incident last year involving the law minister Somnath Bharti where he was on the spot directing the police without understanding the role demarcation between a Political Executive and Permanent Executive(the bueraucracy)

There is a procedure('Rule of Law') by which the police or for that matter anyone in Bureaucracy has to act.

The mentality of this crowd to deliver instant justice has not changed at all. During the Anti-corruption movement Mr. Anna hazare , touting himself as a Gandhian asked for death penalty for the corrupt, and poked his nose into the legislature by demanding his nominees be present in the committee drafting lokpal bill. That was the first instance in Indian political history where persons not elected by the voters got involved in legislating business, thereby disrespecting the established procedures.
There is no doubt that the descendants of such a movement too have this same mentality.

It is high time that we realise subverting democratic institutions and established procedures will bring more harm than good to the society. Agreed, that the existing institutions and procedures have drawbacks. The way ahead is to reform them and not to subvert them.

Two auctions

Two auctions
------------------------------------------------------------------------
One is for the coal blocks. The allocation done by the then UPA government was cancelled last year and SC ordered to auction them. The auction is going on and the bidding amounts proves that the coal blocks were indeed allocated at under rates. So the revenue loss for the exchequer is about to get compensated after the auctions are over.

The next auction is for designer coat suit with name printed worth 10 lakhs. The fund collected through auction is going to be invested to clean ganga.
Does the ends justify the means?? With 75% of countrymen barely sustaining themselves with $2 per day, was it necessary for the executive head of such a country to wear such an expensive suit at first place.

If auctioning the suit and investing the amount to clean ganga will purify the sins, then auctioning the coal blocks and compensating the exchequer too must absolve one of the crime committed. Can a theft or corruption be undone just by recovering the assets without any other punishment?? Doesn't make any sense at all.

Apollo mission and Interstellar movie

The Apollo mission(landing on the moon) was one of the glorious one in the scientific history of USA.

In the movie Interstellar, a school teacher says that "it was a brilliant piece of propaganda which made soviets pour money into useless rockets and machines". A high-profile movie taken in USA  comes with such a scene ridiculing one the historical achievements of USA, based on the conspiracy theories surrounding Apollo mission. Yet there were no  protests or fatwa against the movie,

Besides theory of relativity, gravitational time dilation and other scientific aspects, one thing which the Indians must learn from this movie is how the American society respects freedom of speech.

In India every popular personality, every event, every society and way of living that existed in the past is converted as 'sacred' that any criticism of these is attacked and suppressed. Instead of bragging about our ability to reproduce at faster rates by terming India as 'biggest' democracy, let us realise soon that democracy is not only about 'free and fair' conduct of elections but also about freedom of speech.

Dropping 'secularism' from preamble and Civil Service conduct rules

"Nothing wrong in Sena's demand for deletion of 'secular' from Preamble of Constitution. Leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru and B R Ambedkar were "more intelligent" than the present day Congress leaders and did not include 'secular' and 'socialist' words in the original preamble of the Constitution":-Ravishankar Prasad
The constitution makers were no-doubt intelligent than the present political leaders. They were more faithful and trusted the future politicians that they will lead India in a proper path.
It was this blind faithfulness which they had on the future generations that led to them not finding the necessity to include the word "secular" in the Preamble for Indian Constitution.
And regarding the intelligence of constitution-makers, they were very well aware that constitution must not be so rigid, so that it can be amended suitably to adopt change and not so very flexible that some ideology-driven party securing majority in lok sabha can amend it to suit their needs.
Don't confuse "intelligence" with "blind-trust".
There is something terribly wrong with Shiv sena's demand to delete the word "secular" from the preamble and the Law minister's support to it.
1. Secularism is the basic structure of the constitution which the Judiciary has upheld in its various judgements.
2. The reason that secularism was not in the original preamble and so it can be removed is akin to demanding that the subsequent amendments(99 in total till dec 2014) also can be nullified as they amended the original constitution.
3. As already mentioned above, sorry for the trust the constitution-makers had over the future political leaders and voters.
Just like Article 356("President rule") which was introduced hoping that it would remain a dead letter but turned soon to be a deadly weapon by future leaders, likewise it seems the 'spirit' of "secularism" too will be wiped out soon from the constitution before the word "secularism" gets dropped from the preamble.
4. I can understand the ruling party's zeal to implement the original constitution. Please begin with the "Directive Principles of State Policy"(Part IV) instead of the preamble. Because preamble was enacted after the rest of the constitution was enacted and it is non-justiciable and of ornamental significance.
--One civil servant wants to post this as his FB status. Is it wrong as per civil service conduct rules?? Civil servants please enlighten me

50th anniversary of anti-hindi imposition movement

This Republic day marks the 50th anniversary of anti-hindi 'imposition' movement in Tamilnadu. The movement succeeded in forcing the central government to pass Official Languages Act in 1965 which declared both English and Hindi as Official Languages of the Indian Union.

--But till date Hindi enjoys special status vis-a-vis the remaining eighth schedule languages. There is no reason for the central government to give special funding to promote hindi through a separate department within the Ministry of Home Affairs.

--Central government recruitment exams give an edge to candidates with hindi mother tongue as the exams are conducted only in Hindi and English medium. This puts the non-hindi candidates at disadvantage as they have to master English to compete equally with the hindi speaking candidates

-- To those who think that English is foreign and not "our" Language, please realize that even Hindi is not the language of "many Indians" here and is alien to them. Stop comparing India with countries like Italy or france having a single language. as they are nation-states formed out of something common among its citizens.

-- The legacy of the "anti-hindi imposition" movement which sought to usher in linguistic equality has completely been neglected. Instead future generations were taught wrongly that Hindi is the national language.

--One of the important component of healthy democracy is to protect the interests of minorities. Interests of linguistic minorities within each state and within the country as a whole must be protected to ensure successful functioning of democracy. In order to bring in a 'mindset' of Linguistic equality among citizens, firstly the central government must stop the special and differential treatment for Hindi.

Happy Republic day.

Spokesperson named "Joseph Goebbels"

First time cheaters in relationships are usually given a warning --"Dont do Politics".

Cheating got more synonymous with politics mainly because of two things viz. corruption and floor-crossing. Floor-crossing assumes bigger proportions sometimes during oppurtunistic pre-poll and post-poll alliances among political parties. The Anti-defection law tries to some extent in curtailing floor-crossing among legislators. But there exist no law to control floor-crossing among political leaders or to check opportunistic pre-poll and post-poll alliances.

If it would have been any other political leader joining any other political party, he/she would have received brickbats for floor-crossing on the eve of elections. I have seen Political Parties who receive floor-crossers coming out in defense of them. But this is the first time I see even those party-sympathizers in FB coming out in defense of a floor-crosser. The defense these common voters (who are supposed to think neutrally) put across will make even the party spokespersons to blush.

There is a sudden surge in FB posts praising the floor-crosser's performance in government jobs, images comparing the floor-crosser's superior qualifications with her ally-turned-rival, justifications claiming that the floor-crosser is just entering politics and not switching sides, more and more..... There seems no need to search for any "Goebbels" or to create any separate "Ministry of Propaganda".

I sincerely wish only the politicians 'did politics'.

The cash-for-vote Scam in Delhi:-

The contract and the three bidders.

There is a huge government contract worth crores of Rupees coming up in Delhi.

Mr.B and Mr.C, the high profile bidders decided to bribe the government officials to any extent to win the contract.

Mr.B knows to portray very well that he has a good track record in executing contracts 'with quality' irrespective of the ground reality. Government officials also forget that in weberian bueraucracy, they ought to forget their private interests like religion, caste, family etc so that they can carry out their duties neutrally . This comes in handy for Mr.B who doesnt hesitate to win brownie points by appealing to the religion of government officials.

Mr.C has a track record dating back to more than 50 years. Mr.C's ancestors have mixed records in executing government contracts. In fact, Bidding and executing government contracts is his family's profession.

Then came Mr.AK.
Mr.AK has claimed to have fought tooth and nail against corruption. He won the last contract based on this claim but ran away because he couldnt end corruption. Corruption will end the very next day, when Mr.C's Jan Lok pal comes into operation. But as Jan Lokpal didnt come, Mr.AK terminated the contract just after beginning it.

Now,Mr.AK is trying to cut a deal with the government officer. "Take bribe from both B and C, but don't do the work for them. Award the contract to me. This is the only way to fight corruption. If B or C doesnt give you money go and demand from them. Its your right to ask for bribe and you deserve it. Its not bribe, its a fee to do your duty."

Mr.AK also promises to execute the contract with high quality without any kickbacks or cuts. Because his "Jan lokpal" will end corruption the very next day after coming into operation. Corruption is defined by Mr.AK as "fraudulent actions done by Mr.A and Mr.B to obtain the contract and while executing it". The same fradulent actions done by Mr.AK cannot be covered under that definition.

Forgot to add. you can identify Mr.AK easily by the cap he wears occasionally. The cap is the symbol of the man who said "You must be the change you wish to see in this world"

Dont protect "me from criticism". Protect "criticism from "me"- In support of freedom of speech

On 10th March 1922, Gandhi was arrested for certain articles he wrote in Young India and booked under section 124A of the IPC.

Section 124A of the IPC punishes sedition. Sedition via words spoken or written, visible signs etc are covered in this. The interesting part is the way this section defines sedition. Attempting to bring hatred or contempt, disaffection towards the government, disloyalty etc are defined as sedition.

So when M.K.Gandhi wrote in Young India articles entitled "Disaffection a virtue" and "Tampering with loyalty" it was easy to frame charges against him under this section. The titles themselves said he was trying to spread disaffection and disloyalty towards the government and so, Gandhi and the publisher Mr.Banker were brought to trial. This IPC section exists till date and has been used according to the whims and fancies of the government of the day as only the government has the final say regarding what can be constituted as "disaffection" and what should not. Even a mild criticism towards the government can be booked as sedition under this section. Last year this section was used to arrest a few college students in jaipur who supported the pakistan cricket team!!

Similarly there exists section 66A of Information Technology Act which was used to arrest 2 girls last year for criticizing the bandh organised subsequent to Bal Thackeray's death. And there is also section 295A of IPC which punishes "acts" intend to outrage religious feelings.

Again what exactly is an "act" and to what feelings get outraged are completely subjective. This subjectivity benefits the mighty.  My religion must be strong enough in politics to make sure the government of the day punishes "acts" which outrage my religious feelings. So when Mr.A.K Ramanujam's essay regarding different versions of Ramayana is included in DU's History syllabus, Mr.Dinananth Batra's feelings get outraged. And considering his power, even though the committee set up by Delhi HC recommended including the essay, the DU academic council removed it from the syllabus. The final say regarding what exactly is Ramayana is to be decided by Mr.Batra. He also decides there can be no alternative history for hindus and ensures that  "The hindus: An alternative history", a book by Wendy Dongier gets pulped.

If my religion is powerful enough, I can ensure that movies are shown to me before getting released. I can force the director to mute koran recitals or even alter the screenplay. Despite my power,  voices against me do emerge here and there. There was one poor girl in Pakistan, named Malala, who criticized our decision to ban girls from going to schools. We had to respond to her with bullets.

My religion is so sacred and no one can question it. Questioning something sacred offends my religion. I will keep on expanding the domain of sacred to ensure protection for my religion.

How exactly can freedom of expression benefit a society? There was a thinker named J.S.Mill who defended freedom of expression. He defended it in the following ways.
First argument- No idea is completely false. If we try to ban false ideas, we may miss out the element of truth in it. And truth always runs the risk of being reduced to an unthinking cliche. It is only by exposing truth to opposing views that it can be made sure truth is truth. Else earth would still have been in the center of solar system.

Looking the current relevance of J.S.Mill's first argument, 98% of the people who oppose a particular book have never seen the book, 1% have seen it but never read it. And of the remaining 1%, are afraid of the truth present in that book. Can someone opposing Perumal murugan's novel(madhorubagan) tell me what exactly is the truth regarding that annual car festival in tiruchengode?? If you can tell, just tell. Nobody would oppose your view and you too don't oppose Perumal Murugan's view.

The next argument of J.S.Mill is that. "truth does not emerge by itself". Only through conflict of opposing views that truth emerges. But a certain fact which may not be true can exist as "truth" today. This fact may benefit a particular section and these sections have vested interest to ensure that fact remains a truth perpetually. Thats why the Church suppressed opposing views. Women are not allowed to educate themselves in certain religions lest they come up with an opposing view threatening the "dominants".

Coming back to Gandhi's great trial for charges under section 124A of IPC, Gandhi gave 2 options to the judge trying his case. It was to either resign his post or to inflict on Gandhi the severest penalty if he believes that the law he is trying to protect is doing good for the people. Gandhi also pleaded guilty of the charges and submitted himself to the highest penalty for what in law was a deliberate crime but considered by Gandhi as the highest duty of a citizen.

We too have 2 options. The first is to allow opposing views in the search of truth and to make truth trustworthy by pitting it against opposing views. The second option is of course to stay static, suppress opposing views and walk back to the dark ages.

P.S-I am not unsympathetic to anyone's feelings. But it is hard for me to believe feelings gets hurt by a novel or a movie. Gandhi once said "One cannot hurt me without my permission". Opinions and views can't hurt you without your permission.
